When
the ocean waters begin to warm, millions of shad begin the
swim upstream to their fresh water spawning ground. Each spring
the annual Shad Fest in Lambertville coincides with the heart
of the American shad run up the Delaware River. The fishery
is located on the south end of Lewis Island at the bridge
which connects Lambertville with New Hope. Lambertville's
commercial links with shad span more than a century. The Lewis
family of Lambertville, whose island fishery dates to 1888,
holds the only remaining commercial license to catch shad
with nets.
