This year's International Day is at the Middletown Grange fair grounds September 30, 2001 noon til 6pm rain or shine

The Community School of New Hope-Solebury
June 29, 2001
To Friends of the Community School:
Since 1978, The Community School has provided continuing education evening programs with social, recreational and cultural services and activities. Approximately 800-900 students participate in a choice of 90-100 classes each spring and fall semester. We are most fortunate to draw on talented teachers who live in our area; students join us from New Hope, Solebury, Lambertville, Stockton, Hopewell, Chalfont, Doylestown and neighboring communities.
Through the school’s curriculum, community members are introduced to the area’s many interesting facilities and organizations. We strive to serve the entire community with senior discounts, student scholarships and currently, Driver’s Education for our high school students. It has been our hope to continue to increase our course offerings as well as our enrollment.
As a non-profit educational organization, we are supported solely by tuition charges and sponsor contributions received from members of our business and professional community.
Some of you may already know that the school will not hold classes this fall. We are reassessing the future direction of the school.
In addition, Beth Slavish has decided to pursue other interests, and will not guide the school as our director. The school has flourished under Beth’s direction, and she will be missed by all.
Our geographic area is enjoying unprecedented growth, eliciting never-imagined challenges. Changes within our community, a dramatic increase in our school population, competition from neighboring community education programs, necessitate a thorough examination of the nature of our school and its relationship to the New Hope-Solebury School District.
After twenty-two years, we must take time to look at our future within the community. With help from members of our board, the school board, the school administration, the community, and Beth, we have started this process. We are addressing the critical issue of funding, facilities, and structure.
Thank you for your enthusiastic support. We appreciate your continued interest in The Community School and its mission, and hope you will join us in the future.

Sincerely yours,
Ellen Anthonisen

The Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie
HAS JOINED A COMMUNITY OF MUSEUMS TO LAUNCH ON-LINE FUNDRAISING WITH Shopformuseums.com
Trenton, New Jersey, June 30, 2001, – A community of museums in the United States has joined together to launch Shopformuseums.com. This fundraising portal site, developed and coordinated by a past museum director, is designed to benefit museums, zoos, aquariums and botanical gardens by generating revenue through on-line consumer sales. This
site is the brainstorm of Marilynne Eichinger, founder of the Impression 5 Museum in Lansing, Michigan and former director of the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry.
The process is simple: Go to Shopformuseums.com where you will be asked to select a museum. Choose The Trenton City Museum from the Shopformuseums.com database, enter your e-mail address and password, click on a merchant, make a purchase and the rest is automatic. You may choose from over 125 merchants offering you a variety of brand-name products from: Lands’ End, Martha Stewart, Hallmark, Office Max, Flowers.com, Sharper Image, National Geographic, Chef’s Catalog, Border’s, Britannica, Museum Tour Catalog and many more. Our institution will receive donations quarterly. Donations will be paid to us by the participating merchants as a percentage of sales generated from this site. (Percentages are listed on the Shopformuseums.com Shopping Directory and vary from 2% - 7% of each transaction.)
According to the American Association of Museums: "adequate support for museum operations is the foundation upon which the future of any museum is built. Although major gifts are most often donated for capital projects or endowments, the fiscal health of museums depends on contributions for general operating support. This type of support is often overlooked; we seldom see major social events organized to raise money for museum operations. Yet it is this operating support that keeps the museum doors open and their staffs paid." Museums are bonded to their communities in ways that no other nation’s cultural institutions are. Museums serve as stewards of heritage, as educators and as community gathering places. Museums celebrate America’s cultural diversity –
Latin American, African American, Native American, Asian American, Norwegian American – these are just a few of the ethnic groups in this country with museums that preserve and exhibit their heritage. Museums are the keepers of the
natural and cultural heritage of America and its people – the rich multicultural diversity that makes our nation so vibrant. Please visit www.shopformuseums.com or call (your institution) for further information. 609-989-3632 www.ellarslie.org

Posted 06/11/01 - GREENE& GREENE GALLERY'S 8TH ANNUAL DISCOVERIES SHOW BEGINS JUNE 30, 2001 OpeningReception Scheduled For July 6, 2001 in Lambertville, NJ  -  One of the most exciting shows Greene & Greene Gallery, 32 Bridge Street in Lambertville, New Jersey hosts each year is the annual Discoveries Show. This year's 8th Annual Discoveries Exhibition begins June 30, 2001 and continues through September 3, 2001. The Opening Reception will be held July 6, 2001 from 5:00pm-7:00pm. The public is invited to attend. The exhibition features a combination of well recognized artists who will be exhibiting in the area for the first time and younger emerging artists who are just bursting onto the art scene. This exhibition offers artists a unique opportunity to introduce their work to new collectors and allows collectors an opportunity to discover the new rising stars in the craft world. Gallery owner Valerie Greene is always seeking new artists to invite to participate in this annual show. She travels to national craft markets, visit craftsperson's studios and reviews slides and submissions from artists around the country to create an exciting and diverse show. The exhibition this year features close to one hundred limited editions and one of a kind pieces in gold, sterling and fine metals with precious and semi-precious stones and gems. Greene explains the show has always been a popular one with her clients. "Who doesn't appreciate discovering anew artist with a fresh vision or meeting a young craftsperson whose career you can follow for years to come? So many of our top artists first exhibited with us through the Discoveries Show that it remains one of our most anticipated events of the year, " she explains. One of the exhibiting artists, Sarah Graham, has been named a "Rising Star" twice this year. She was both featured in Basel Magazine and later named by the jurors for the JCK National Show as a Rising Star. Her work features stunningly contrasting materials such as blackened steel and yellow gold accented with black, cognac and white diamonds as well as Tahitian pearls. The collaborative team of Steven Ford and David Forlano will be exhibiting their unique creations in polymer clay. Their studio known as City Zen Cane has taken the top prize at a number of national shows and has been honored with Awards for Excellence from NICHE and The American Craft Council. This team has played a major role in establishing polymer clay as an exciting new medium in the larger craft movement and their works have been featured in sixteen major articles and books. Elaine Unzicker combines castings of various parts of plants and a chain mail mesh in her very wearable jewelry. The fluid movement of the mesh allows her jewelry to caress and contour to the body and allows each person to wear the jewelry very differently. Her works have been seen in Women's Wear Daily, Accent Magazine and Artists' News among other publications. Nina Mann creates limited edition and one of a kind pieces in etched precious metals using an ancient Korean technique called Keum-Boo where 24 carat gold is fused onto pure silver. Mann then etches the surface constantly altering and transforming the surfaces, textures and colors. Jeweler Larry Seiger grew up in his family's jewelry store and began training with his father at the age of twelve. Originally creating custom jewelry for the trade he opened his own studio in 1992 and has taken Best in Show in numerous competitions and is one of only four American jewelers to pass the Jewelers of America Master Bench Certification Program. Debbie Tuch is another exhibitor who also made a commitment to her craft early in life. She began making and selling jewelry at the age of thirteen. Since graduating from RISD her works have been featured in national juried and invitational shows throughout the country. Catherine Hyland and Martina Windels of Martina & Co. are also included in Discoveries 2001. Throughout the year, Greene and Greene Gallery features an exciting collection of artist-designed jewelry, finely crafted furniture and functional art by nationally and internationally recognized artisans. Each piece is carefully selected by Valerie Greene to reflect the gallery's commitment to artistic integrity and technical mastery. The Gallery features Jeffrey Greene's finely crafted contemporary furniture, original designs and custom work in exotic and domestic hard woods; personal accessories including hand dyed scarves and handcrafted handbags and functional art and handcrafted accessories for home and office including ceramics, hand blown glass and
designer lamps. The gallery is open Monday - Friday 12noon - 5pm, Saturday - Sunday from 11am to 6pm or by appointment. For more information please call 609-397-7774 or visit the gallery on line at www.nolegsneeded.com/greeneandgreene/html.

Concorde Fine Arts Announces It's First Annual Bastille Day Celebration To Launch Their New Website

Will Anderson, founder of Concorde Fine Arts, an endeavor to promote French and American art, has announced that they will sponsor a Bastille Day Celebration to launch their website. Anderson has established the website to assist contemporary artists in gaining broader global recognition while assisting them in marketing their works internationally. As an ambassador of the visual arts, Concorde Fine Arts celebrates the long time historic and cultural link between the two artistic powers of Bucks County, Pennsylvania and Paris, France. Proceeds from the website benefit area not for profit organizations ARC (Association of Retarded Citizens) and AIR (Artists In Residence).

The Concorde Fine Arts Bastille Day Celebration will be held Friday, July 13 & Saturday, July 14, 2001 and will include a number of events throughout town such as wine tastings, art exhibitions featuring both American and French artists affiliated with the website, music, activities for children and the Alliance Francais annual Bastille Day Picnic. The celebration will culminate with a Reception Saturday evening featuring food and festivities at the newly developed Union Square site on Bridge Street.

New Hope Mayor Larry Keller will serve as Honorary Co-chair along with the Mayor of Senlis, France, a small medieval town on the outskirts of Paris. George Michael of Union Square has offered his site as the central location for the annual celebration and Pat McKenna of the Old Stone Church has also offered her site for activities.

The response has been very favorable. Founder Will Anderson and associate Robin Larsen attended the New Hope Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting last week and were very pleased by the support of the residents and business owners. So many people have joined us in the excitement over this idea-we hope to build this Bastille Day Celebration into an annual event, Larsen commented.

Everyone seems very enthusiastic, explained Anderson who also stressed in his presentation to the Chamber that this would be an event focusing on the history and quality that New Hope is known for.

Chamber President Herb Millman expressed that “The New Hope Chamber of   Commerce is proud to make the French connection by supporting the Bastille Day Celebration. New Hope and France share the same sensibility concerning art, cultural and history. We eagerly look forward to this event.

The response from France has also been encouraging. The Mont Royale, a Concorde Hotel property in Senlis is working with Concorde Fine Arts in helping to arrange for the Mayor's participation and will also be hosting an American artist to paint at their site later in the year.

Concorde Fine Arts plans to establish this celebration as an annual event. Anyone interested in learning more about how their business might participate or would be interested in volunteering to help with the July 13 -14th event are encouraged to call Concorde Fine Arts at 215-862-3396 (mailbox 2).

Donating photographer David Graham often captures Americans and their idiosyncratic splendor. This photograph was made in an attempt to dramatize the landscape so that a small piece of paper might regain some of the magic of the original scene. His photographs regularly appear in the New York Times Magazine and other national periodicals. His work is also found in his three books Land of the Free, Only in America, and American Beauty. Recently his work was featured at The University of Pennsylvania's Institute of   Contemporary Art and at the Aperture Gallery in New York City. His photographs are collected nationally and internationally and can be found at New York's Museum of Modern Art and The Philadelphia Museum of Art.  Both Katia McGuirk and her daughter have donated handcrafted tiles to the annual event. McGuirk, who is an AIR residency artist, attended Rhode Island School Of Design and worked as production ceramist and production manager at the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in Doylestown, PA. She currently directs her own studio where she makes handmade tiles that are distributed
throughout the country in galleries and design showrooms. She is a member of Tile Heritage, an educational organization devoted to awareness, research and preservation of ceramic surfaces. She travels around the world to learn more about traditionally based tilemaking techniques and to collect and photograph tile and mosaic works which she shares with students in her residencies.

Proceeds from the April 28th Auction will benefit the non-profit organization dedicated to placing professional visual, performing, and literary artists into area schools in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, including New Hope Solebury Elementary School, New Hope Solebury Middle School, Goodnoe Elementary, Sol Feinstone Elementary, Delaware Township School and Littlebrook Elementary. AIR artists work with teachers in developing curriculum-based arts programming which enrich and enliven children's educational experiences and offer students a unique opportunity to interact with professional artists in a supportive learning environment.

In addition to AIR sponsored fundraising events like the April 28th Auction, funding for AIR programs is provided by donations from parents, community members, corporations, schools and PTO's. To reserve tickets please call AIR at 215-862-0735. Visa and Mastercard are accepted and all donations are tax deductible as allowed by law. The benefit - A Gourmet Grazing - will feature a bountiful array of food from some of the area's finest restaurants. Jim Hamilton, owner of The Fish House and Hamilton's Grill will coordinate the food for the event. Local talent will provide entertainment throughout the evening. A Modern Day Romeo & Juliet With An Urban-Caribbean Beat
On November 4, 2000, R. Ashton “WRAGGS” Wall and the newly formed not-for-profit Colloquium Depot, Ltd. will present a world premiere concert version of her new musical COLOURS at the Stephen S. Buck Theatre in New Hope, Pennsylvania. And once again Bucks County, recognized as a great try-out town, will launch another exciting new work in theatre. A new show goes through many stages before it hopefully reaches New York. There are readings, workshops, rewrites and more readings until the writers feel they have it just right. COLOURS creators have made that journey and now have chosen to premiere their work in New Hope. COLOURS, a modern day Romeo and Juliet, is more than just a love story. This entertaining evening of musical theatre explores the ideas of diversity, tolerance and the common challenges all young people face as they set out on their own path in life. The engaging score draws from a variety of musical influences including pop, rap, and rhythm & blues with overtones of a calypso beat. The Concert Version of COLOURS guarantees a wonderful evening of original music for the entire family.

Posted 6/21/00: CALL FOR VISUAL, LITERARY & PERFORMING ARTISTS AIR - Artists In Residence Continues To Expand Programs & Opportunities For Area Artists
AIR, Artists In Residence, a not for profit organization dedicated to placing professional visual and performing artists, writers and musicians into area schools has announced it is now accepting proposals from artists interested in working in area schools during the 2000-2001 school year. AIR residencies offer students a unique opportunity to interact with professional artists and explore diverse opportunities for self-expression. The program supports long and short-term residencies, school-wide events such as Celebrate the Arts Days, performances, and workshop demonstrations for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Residencies are curriculum based and often times two or more artists collaborate on individual residencies. The organization also provides mentors for specific projects such as the recent opera created by fourth grade students at New Hope Solebury Elementary School and also works with other organizations such as Concordia Chamber Players for whom they scheduled a series of informational performances in area schools this past year. Just completing its third year, the organization has grown from serving 500 students in one Bucks County school to serving 4500 students in eight schools in Bucks, Hunterdon, and Mercer Counties. The program has been welcomed by school administrators, PTO's, and teachers as an ideal way to enrich students' experiences in all disciplines. Due to expansion AIR is currently seeking new artists within the community who may wish to participate in their 2000-2001 program. Opportunities exist for artists working in all areas of visual, literary and performing arts. Typical residencies range from 1-4 days; collaborative residencies (those using more than 1 artist) are a maximum of 3 days. Classes range in size from 22-30 students with an average of 4 classes per grade level. Artists spend on an average 1 hour with each class for a total of 4 hours per grade level per day. All schools are within 15 miles of New Hope, PA excluding Johnson Park in Princeton, NJ which is approximately 24 miles from New Hope and 35 miles from Philadelphia. All Artists are paid, AIR pays for all materials, and volunteers are available to assist artists. Interested artists may contact AIR co-director Yvonne Love 215-996-1583 for proposal forms. AIR residencies are funded by a combination of corporate, personal and business donations, school participation, and AIR's annual fundraising efforts.
