March 3, 2002
New Hope Partners in Progress, the community volunteer network, has announced its annual dance party that will be held at Odette’s Restaurant, South River Road in New Hope on Sunday, March 3, 2002 beginning at 6:00 PM. This year’s event entitled “The Big Band Sound Meets Rock”, will feature dancing to the sound of the big band era interwoven with the great songs of the Rock and Roll years. The dance party offers enjoyment for fans of each era and promises to be a fun time. Local disc jockey, Gary Markus, will play the sounds of two great musical eras from 7 PM to 11:30 PM. The party will include hors d’oeuvres, pasta buffet, beverages and a cash bar. PiP President, Ethel Aschenbrenner, noted that the proceeds from the dance party will be used to purchase new flower planters for New Hope. PiP’s New Hope Garden Club volunteers plant gardens in barrels that are located throughout the borough. Aschenbrenner feels that the new planters will blend in beautifully with the concrete and brick sidewalks in New Hope and will contribute to the continued enhancement of the borough’s appearance.
Tickets for the event are $35 and can be purchased at Cockamamies’ on North Bridge Street in New Hope and at the New Hope Visitors Center on South Main Street.

Jeffrey Greene Studion Named Finalist for a Niche Award for His Outstanding Carved Wood
Jeffrey Greene has again been honored as a finalist for a Niche award - this time for Design Excellence in the category of Carved Wood for a set of beautifully carved doors entitled "Tree Dance." The 7 x 47 x 2 award winning doors, commissioned by Edward Chencinski a designer with IBM, are carved black walnut over tempered glass. Founded in 1990, the NICHE Awards program recognizes the outstanding creative achievements of American craft artists who produce work for craft galleries and retail stores. Judging criteria are based on technical excellence and creativity, market viability and a distinct quality of unique and original thought. The Awards are sponsored by NICHE, the exclusive trade publication for progressive retailers of American crafts, to recognize the nation's foremost brilliant and innovative artists. Only 11 artists of the more than 1000 considered were named as a finalist for a NICHE award.
This is not the first national award received by Jeffrey Greene. Greene was honored with the Award for Design Excellence at the Philadelphia Furniture Show in 2000 and was nominated again in 2001 for his Fanback Rocker. He also garnered the 1999 NICHE Design Award and was one of five artists selected for the James Michener Art Museum's Invitational Show of Fine Woodworking. His chairs have also been selected to represent Pennsylvania craftsmen on the Governor's dais at the Annual Pennsylvania Governor's Awards for the Arts in 1999 and 2001. In addition, Jeffrey Greene Design Studio won the Cohen Trust Award at The Philadelphia Furniture Show for Best Apprenticeship Program; in 1998 the studio won the top award from Fine Woodworking Magazine for Greene's outstanding apprenticeship training and in the same year was included in the Studio Tour Schedule of the Smithsonian Institute. The Jeffrey Greene Design Studio is located in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Greene & Greene Gallery, 32 Bridge Street in Lambertville, NJ is the exclusive representative for Greene's work. SECOND ANNUAL HOLIDAY BENEFIT - December 6, 2001
Several local musicians are holding a Holiday Benefit Concert to support breast cancer research in New Jersey through the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation RACE FOR THE CURE®. The concert will be held at Holly Hedge Estate Bed & Breakfast, New Hope, PA, December 6 at 8 p.m. Prior to the concert a Silent Auction will be set up from 7 pm to 8 pm.
Last year, the Annual Holiday Benefit concert raised over $3,000 in donations for the Komen NJ Race for the Cure.® Proceeds from this year's benefit will again be donated to the Komen Foundation to stay in the state of New Jersey for Breast Cancer research. This year alone, 182,800 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and over 40,000 women will die of breast cancer. Many women do not have a significant family history of the disease -- the most significant risk factors are age and being female. Most women diagnosed with breast cancer survive the disease. If detected early, there is a five-year survival rate of over 95%. This event is an idea that came about from a suggestion that a Christmas Concert would be beautiful in the barn at Holly Hedge and a few phone calls later, the concert was planned. The Annual Holiday Benefit hopes to work with local businesses garnering contributions and furthering the education of the public about breast cancer research. Local businesses that contribute to the Holiday Benefit will be recognized in the sponsor section of the evening's program.
The program will consist of vocal artists and a storyteller who are generously donating their time and effort. Jane Arthur of Trenton, Rich Frings of Bernardsville, Beth Chauncey of Lambertville and Tom McGrory of Washington, and Julie Mazzarella of New Brunswick, are all trained professionals who will be performing a blend of traditional, original and classical holiday pieces.
For sponsorships, tickets to the event and additional information, please contact Rachel Marjne at Annual Holiday Benefit, PO Box 5188, New Brunswick, NJ 08903 or email rachelmarjne@yahoo.com. Directions and further details are available at www.echauncey.com/annualbenefitconcert
