The scenic Schuylkill River is about 130 miles long with the watershed of approximately 2000 square miles. The eastern branch of the Schuylkill River is in the Appalachian Mountains near the town of Tamaqua, PA; the western branch of the river is at Minersville, PA. The two branches join at the town of Schuylkill Heaven. The Tulpehocken Creek joins the Schuylkill River at Reading, PA; the Wissahickon Creek joins it in Northwest Philadelphia. Other river feeds include the Little Schuylkill River, Maiden Creek, Manatawny Creek, French Creek, and Perkiomen Creek. The Schuylkill River joins the Delaware River in Philadelphia, northeast of Philadelphia International Airport.
The Schuylkill River in Philadelphia is a popular recreational resource. The late 19th-century boathouses along Kelly Drive are famous Philadelphia landmarks and home to the oldest rowing clubs. The Schuylkill River Rail along Kelly Drive is an important recreational path for walkers, joggers, bicyclists and rollerbladers.
The below photos of the scenic Schuylkill River are taken by Anna Mavricheva on November 12, 2007. Anna maintains NorthwestPhiladelphia.com website which contains a multitude of photos of the Historic Northwest Philadelphia in its Picture Gallery section.
