FONTS: locate, copy, install, obtain 11/18/99

Windows 95/98/NT

Fonts live in the Fonts directory, which is a sub-directory of Windows directory (or winnt directory if you use Windows NT.)

This is what your fonts directory looks like:

True type fonts (most likely you use true type fonts on your computer) have .TTF extension. By double clicking on the file you can view your fonts with a default font viewer.

To close the viewer window either click Done button or simply press D key. Now, if you want to view the next font, instead of using the mouse to select it, use the arrow key and press Enter to open the font in the font viewer. Press D key to close to viewer.

If you need to copy some font, select that font and  do Ctrl+C. Then select the drive or the directory where you want the file to be copied to and do Ctrl+V.

To install a new font go to Control Panel (click Start button, go to Settings and select Control Panel.) In Control Panel double click the Fonts icon. In the menu go to File and select Install new font.

And click OK. If you want to use a newly installed font in the application that you opened before installing the font, you will have to restart that application, i.e. you were writing a letter using Microsoft Word, and somewhere in the middle of writing this letter, you decided that you need to use some fancy new font. After you installed it, you need to quit MS Word and open it again. Now you will be able to use this newly installed font in your letter.

You can purchase collection of fonts on a CD or on the Internet, oftentimes fonts are included as an add-on in various clip art collections. And you can also download free fonts from many sites on the Internet.

http://www.chank.com/rotodesign   is just one of many sites where you can obtain interesting new fonts for free.

You can find lots of sites with downloadable free fonts by simply using the key words "free fonts."

General Advice: Don't install too many fonts at once, you probably should not have more than 200 fonts. It's unlikely you're utilizing all of the fonts you have. Go through your directory of fonts from time to time and uninstall the ones you don't use.
