Multifile File Rename 11-21-99

Perhaps you were a Windows 3.x user a while ago and if so, you probably remember that Good Olde File Manager:

Or, perhaps, you worked with Windows NT 3.5 and you remember the 32-bit version of the File Manager.

But it is more than likely that you are on Windows 95/98/NT 4.0 and instead of the File Manager you use Windows Explorer:

Unfortunetly Windows Explorer lacks an important feature - the ability to rename several files with a single command, the feature that we used to be able to enjoy in the File Manager.

Until recently I had to find the ways around that particular limitation. I used the 16-bit File Manager, which still exisits in Windows95/98 and Windows NT 4.0   (just type WINFILE at Start -> Run.) But since it's a 16-bit version of File Manager, that would not work with long file names. Or I had to use MS DOS prompt with long file names. But about a month ago I finally found a solution for this annoying problem. It is called MiltiRen. MultiRen, enhances Windows Explorer with a fairly sophisticated multiple file rename capability. It runs under Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.

To access MultiRen, select two or more files from within Explorer, right-click for the context menu, and select Multiple Rename.

In addition to the standard wildcard characters, MultiRen supports special commands that add sequence numbers to filenames, force uppercase or lowercase, and more.
