just yesterday sheila was in
school with her cool outfits
while dan was a toddler.
we went to pick her up each day
but before we did,
the new housing development
had to be checked out.
dan knew heavy machinery even at
the age of four and
corrected me when
i said it was a bucket loader
rather than a back hoe,
or something like that.
now sheila drives to albany by
herself, navigating the
tappan zee bridge
with ten bucks in her wallet
while i still call out after her,
when she leaves, to be careful.
dan hangs out with friends and
talks history
and music and politics
at the tender age of fifteen.
An old soul with a mohawk
and a giant intellect.
he tells me in good spirits
he grew up in the car....
and i know he is right.
