OK, maybe I've been watching Star Trek for too many years. I make
no claims of being mentally sound or unsound. But think about it,
over thousands of years every species mutates both physically and
mentally to reflect changing conditions. Our species started in
small family groups, hunting and fishing and living in caves. We
slowly evolved into a humongous civilization with the technical
capacity to feed and care for millions. Cities, governments, laws
and humanity became refined in the 1900's. We lost our hair and
muscles (and our minds, some would argue). Our arms grew shorter.
Now on to the next thousands of years. Six billion procreators at
the kick off. A huge accumulation of greedy people in the most powerful
positions (big business and governments alike). Millions starving
and warring in third world countries. Humanity quickly being reduced
to little more than a quest for sustenance, wealth, sex and power.
No logical means in sight to stop the spiral. So what will our species
resemble in a thousand years. Maybe the poor will physically mutate
into some type of organism capable of feeding on garbage and pollution.
Probably something akin to rats. The wealthy and powerful will likely
have huge heads and withered sticks for arms and legs. Maybe something
like Jabba the Hutt. The Jabba's will procreate with the rats and
produce yet a third mutation
Let's look at the more subtle psychological/sociological changes
in just the past fifty years. Sports, no longer a wholesome pursuit
geared to teach youth the values of sportsmanship, rather combat
for money. Society and children? When I was a kid, you could go
to most any neighborhood and trick or treat. There was a general
feeling that most adults looked out for the young. Every stranger
is now viewed with suspicion and as a potential threat. The children
now integrate this into their views of society from a young age.
Suspicion, fear and violence among our own kind has become a staple
in our genetic blueprint. We've gone from caves to communities and
now back to the jungle (albeit an asphalt jungle, with the primary
predators being our own kind).
If past evolutionary trends are any indicator, the human species
of the future will evolve into organisms physically and psychologically
geared towards combat with each other. Their organs will evolve
into unrecognizable mutations that are capable of existing in a
cesspool. What might these creatures of the future look like?
