August 2002 - Some thoughts on the best and the worst
of  American media over the past few months.

The Best: Worldlink TV - This network broadcasts some truly meaningful programming with the capacity to create understanding between different cultures."WorldLink TV is the first national network offering a global perspective on news, current events and culture, presenting viewpoints seldom covered in the U.S. media. They present first-run documentaries on global issues, current affairs series, international news, classic foreign feature films, and the best of world music". These folks get my vote and contributions.

.

The Worst: The Anna Nicole Show - Regarding degradation of foreign opinions on American culture, one can only wonder what folks in other countries thought when picking this debut up on their satellite dishes. I quess it does validate that free speech is alive and well, even in the gutter. The brief excerpt below (of her calling her kid to check up on him) sums up the entire show.
Anna: Punkin? Hi baby! Do you love me than all the raindrops in the morning? Than all the fish in the sea?
Kid: (Silence)
Anna: I love you that much too! Didja order you somethin' to eat?
Kid: Yeah.. I ordered pizza.
Anna: WHAT??
Kid: Pizza.
Anna: Pig snot???
Kid: PIZ-ZA!!!
Anna: OOOH! Pizza! Well, I gotta go... bye!
(Hangs up)
I gotta put on my jammies! Jerry (Springer) is almost on!

The fact that this women is still of breeding age is scary. The fact that producers and networks exist that will publish anything for a buck is also scary. The fact that I periodically watch this trash is scarier yet.
