Republicans, Democrats, No-party’s, Greens, Libertarians, Anyone who cares about their own rights and liberties, or the rights and liberties of their children – please read:
- Do you believe in basic civil rights?
- How about basic human rights?
- Do you support women’s rights?
- Do you believe you should have rights to your own religious freedom?
- Would you like the Justices that serve you in the highest court of our country, the Supreme Court, to be independent, fair-minded individuals who will protect your liberties and rights?
If you answered yes to any question above, then you have a civic responsibility to call your elected public officials and tell them so. If you don’t, all it takes is a simple vote in the U.S. Senate to confirm John Roberts, and then you can watch these rights stripped away from you, your children and your children’s children.
Judge John Roberts, a corporate lobbyist and far-right wing lawyer who is currently serving on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, was recently nominated by President Bush to replace Justice Sandra Day O’Connor on the Supreme Court. Right-wing extremists are ecstatic. He is exactly what they had in mind: not a moderate conservative who used the constitution and her head to come up with tough decisions like O’Connor, but an ideologue who sides with their right-wing radical agenda, regardless of the case. And the extremists think there are two bonuses: he has less of a paper trail than many radically right-wing prospective nominees AND he’s only 50, meaning that he will most likely be on our highest court, writing the law of the land, for 30 years.
Well, he may not have the judicial paper trail, since he’s only been on the D.C. Circuit Court for 2 years, but he has a very lengthy trail that pre-dates his court experience. Here are some facts about John Roberts:
- Worked to keep Congress from defending parts of the Voting Rights Act
- As an appeals court judge, he ruled that the Geneva Convention doesn't apply to some prisoners of war
- Promoted decisions that could erode the Americans with Disabilities Act while lead counsel for Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Ky, Inc. v. Williams.
- Worked on behalf of Operation Rescue, a violent anti-abortion group.
- Opposed clean air rules and worked to help coal companies strip-mine mountaintops.
- Appears to want to limit the scope of the Endangered Species Act, and in papers he wrote while in law school he supported far-right legal theories about "takings" which would make it almost impossible for the government to enforce most environmental legislation.
- Acted as Deputy Solicitor to Kenneth Starr; White House counsel for Reagan.
- As Deputy Solicitor General, Roberts argued in a brief before the Supreme Court that "we continue to believe that Roe was wrongly decided and should be overruled. The Court’s conclusion in Roe that there is a fundamental right to an abortion...finds no support in the text, structure, or history of the Constitution."
As you can see, Roberts is not a moderate conservative who will stand up for what the majority of Americans believe. If Roberts gets appointed to the Supreme Court, Roe v. Wade will be stripped down to being upheld by only ONE VOTE. With John Roberts you can disregard women’s rights, civil rights, human rights or consumer rights – all you get is a right-wing ideologue.
Pick up your phone. Whether you call them and speak your mind on a regular basis or have NEVER called your U.S. Senators who serve you, now is the time. You are their constituents! Tell them that John Roberts, the corporate lobbyist who Bush recently nominated to the Supreme Court is NOT your choice for the Justice to replace Sandra Day O’Connor. Tell them that they need to pick an independent and fair-minded jurist, not Roberts.
